Being vegan in Suffolk: The six restaurants you need to visit now

It’s not easy being vegan. You probably don’t need me to tell you that. You’ve already given up cheese and burgers (that’s difficult enough in itself). But, on top of that, you have to deal with the awkwardness of eating out. Settling for yet another house salad or plate of chips, because the kitchen team can’t possibly scrape together anything more appetising.

But, fear not. Luckily these Suffolk restaurants are going above and beyond to cater for vegans. Take a look at the six places you should visit for seriously good plant-based grub.

1. The Walnut Tree, Thwaite
You really will be spoilt for choice, so make sure you come hungry. It’s difficult to pick their best-selling dish (we’ve heard good things about pretty much everything on the menu), but they’re well-known across the country for awesome curries – so that’s probably not a bad place to start.

2. Cradle, Sudbury
Lots of homemade goodies and locally sourced produce, magicked together by the kitchen team to create really, really good food. So good, in fact, that you’ll need to book in advance – otherwise you might not be able to bag a table.

3. Hullabaloo, Ipswich
The recently reopened Hullabaloo on Cemetery Road serves exclusively plant-based food. It’s open Thursdays – Sundays, so we recommend going for Saturday morning vegan waffles to kick start your weekend.

4. The Swan, Lavenham
Head Chef Justin Kett (crowned 2018 Chef of the Year in the Eat Suffolk Food and Drink Awards) has created a mouthwatering spread of vegan food with the help of Delicious Nutritious in Felixstowe. Yum.

5. The Greenhouse Café, Felixstowe
Green by name, green by nature. This family-run café is the go-to place for amazing vegan cakes and croissants. It’s also worth sampling their savoury options if you’ve got space.

6. Tuddenham Mill, Tuddenham
A true destination restaurant with award-winning food and amazing flavour combinations. We highly recommend bring your friends, family, colleagues, boyfriends, girlfriends – anyone you want to impress really.
